Surah Sad — Verse 75

• مَا مَنَعَكَ — What prevented you or held you back?

• مِنَ الْعَالِينَ — Among the lofty ones or the arrogant; those who exalt themselves above others without right.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses Iblis (Satan) directly after his refusal to prostrate before Adam, questioning him with a tone that exposes his true nature. Allah asks: "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My Hands?" This is a rhetorical question meant to make Iblis confront his own rebellion. The phrase "what I created with My Hands" highlights the immense honour Allah bestowed upon Adam — a creation made directly by Allah’s power, without father or mother, and distinguished above all other creations. This honour made Adam worthy of the angels’ prostration as a sign of respect and obedience to Allah’s command.

Then Allah poses two alternatives: "Did you become arrogant, or were you among the lofty ones?" In other words, was your refusal born of pride and self-importance, or did you consider yourself already among those who are elevated and above such an act? Both possibilities condemn Iblis, for neither arrogance nor false superiority justifies disobedience to Allah’s explicit command. The verse establishes that Iblis’s sin was rooted in pride — a pride that led him to look down upon Adam and to reject the divine order.

This verse also affirms the attribute of Allah’s Hands in a manner befitting His majesty, without distortion or comparison to creation. It is a reminder that Allah’s actions are perfect and purposeful, and His commands are to be obeyed without question.

The Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all that exists, honoured Adam with His direct creation and commanded the angels to bow in respect. How many of us refuse to accept the truth because of our own self-image or status?

This verse is a timeless lesson: humility is the key to salvation, and pride is the door to ruin. When Allah commands, the only fitting response is submission — not debate, not comparison, not self-justification. Let this story be a mirror for your own soul. Ask yourself: Do I obey Allah with humility, or do I let my ego stand in the way? The path of the believers is the path of those who lower themselves before their Lord, and in that lowering, they are truly elevated. Embrace this beautiful submission, for it is the very essence of Islam — peace through surrender to the One who created you with His infinite wisdom and mercy.
