Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qabdatuhu (قَبْضَتُهُ): His grasp or hold — meaning the entire earth is within His power and control on the Day of Judgment.
- Matwiyyāt (مَطْوِيَّاتٌ): Folded up or rolled up — referring to the heavens being folded by His might.
- Yamīnihi (بِيَمِينِهِ): His Right Hand — an attribute of Allah that befits His majesty, without asking "how" or likening it to creation.
- Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ): Glorified and Exalted is He — declaring His absolute perfection and transcendence above all imperfections.
Tafsir (Explanation):
These polytheists failed to honor Allah with the honor due to Him. They ascribed partners to Him in worship, placing weak, powerless created beings alongside the Creator of the heavens and the earth — the One whose power knows no limits and whose might encompasses everything. They forgot, or perhaps never truly realized, the sheer greatness of the One they were associating others with.
Consider the scene Allah paints for us: on the Day of Judgment, the entire earth — with all its mountains, oceans, rivers, and everything within it — will be held entirely in His grasp like a tiny pebble in the palm of a hand. The seven heavens, with all their vastness and grandeur, will be folded up in His Right Hand as easily as one folds a piece of paper. This is the Majesty of Allah — the One who created everything from nothing, who sustains everything without effort, and who will roll up the entire universe on that Day as if it were never more than a scroll.
Yet despite this overwhelming reality, people still worshipped idols, stones, and beings that cannot even protect themselves from harm. How astonishing is this injustice against the truth! How great is this ignorance of their Lord!
So Allah declares Himself glorified and exalted far above what the polytheists associate with Him. He is far removed from any partner, any equal, any comparison, and any deficiency. His attributes are perfect, His power is absolute, and His majesty is beyond anything the human mind can fully comprehend.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse invites every soul to pause and reflect: Who is the One you worship? Is it the One who holds the entire universe in His grasp, or is it a creation that cannot even turn away a fly? When you truly understand the greatness of Allah, your heart naturally submits to Him alone. Your prayers become more humble, your trust in Him becomes more complete, and your fear of His displeasure becomes more profound.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah will take hold of the earth on the Day of Judgment and fold the heavens with His Right Hand, then He will say: 'I am the King, where are the kings of the earth?'" (Agreed upon). Imagine that moment — every tyrant, every ruler, every powerful person will stand powerless before the true King.
So let us honor Allah as He deserves to be honored — by worshipping Him alone, by obeying His commands, by trusting in His wisdom, and by never associating anyone or anything with Him. For He is the One who deserves all praise, all glory, and all submission. And when we truly grasp His greatness, our hearts find peace, our souls find purpose, and our lives find meaning in His worship alone.
