Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تُجَادِلْ – to argue, plead, or defend on behalf of someone.
  • يَخْتَانُونَ – they betray, deceive, or act treacherously (the verb implies repeated and deliberate betrayal).
  • أَنفُسَهُمْ – themselves (i.e., they harm their own souls by their actions).
  • خَوَّانًا – one who is habitually treacherous, a chronic betrayer.
  • أَثِيمًا – one who is deeply sinful, persistent in wrongdoing.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a profound moral and spiritual principle: do not argue or plead on behalf of those who betray themselves. The people referred to here are those who deceive their own souls by committing acts of treachery and sin—believing they are harming others, while in reality, they are destroying their own spiritual well-being. Their betrayal is not merely against others; it is first and foremost against themselves, because every sin they commit leaves a stain on their hearts and distances them from Allah’s mercy.

The verse then delivers a decisive warning: Allah does not love those who are habitually treacherous and persistently sinful. This is not a temporary lapse or a single mistake—it describes a person whose character has become defined by betrayal and sin. Such a person has chosen a path that leads them away from Allah’s love, and no one—no matter how eloquent their defense—can change that reality. When someone persists in treachery, their own actions testify against them, and any attempt to justify or defend them only deepens their self-deception.

The deeper lesson here is one of justice and integrity. As believers, we are called to stand for truth and fairness, even when it is difficult. Defending those who are clearly wrong does not help them; it only enables their corruption and harms the community. True compassion means guiding people toward repentance and accountability, not shielding them from the consequences of their deeds. Allah, who is All-Knowing and All-Just, sees every hidden intention and every secret act, and His judgment is always perfect.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder of the mercy and justice of Allah. He does not abandon His servants, but He also does not love those who persist in treachery. The door of repentance is always open—no matter how deep one’s sins may be, turning back to Allah with sincerity wipes away the past and restores His love. So let us be people of honesty and integrity, avoiding betrayal in all its forms, and let us never defend wrongdoing, for in doing so, we protect our own souls and earn the love of our Creator. The path of righteousness is the path of true success, both in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 105-109 — An-Nisa

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allah has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate.
And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
And do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Indeed, Allah loves not one who is a habitually sinful deceiver.
They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing.
Here you are - those who argue on their behalf in [this] worldly life - but who will argue with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will [then] be their representative?
