Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- "Was-taghfir" (وَاسْتَغْفِرِ): Seek forgiveness, ask for pardon and covering of sins.
- "Ghafūr" (غَفُورًا): The Oft-Forgiving; He who forgives repeatedly and abundantly, no matter how many times the servant returns to Him in repentance.
- "Raḥīm" (رَّحِيمًا): The Most Merciful; He who showers His compassion and kindness upon His creation, especially upon those who turn to Him.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and through him, the entire Muslim nation — to seek forgiveness from Allah in all circumstances and at all times. The context of this command follows the incident of the man who sought the Prophet's intercession in a dispute, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) was inclined to punish the Jewish man involved. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, corrected this inclination and instructed His Prophet to seek forgiveness for what he had intended, reminding him that Allah is the One who forgives sins and overlooks the shortcomings of His servants.
The verse teaches us a profound lesson: even the best of creation, the Prophet himself, was commanded to seek forgiveness — not because he committed a sin, but to elevate his rank and to teach his followers that seeking forgiveness is a lifelong practice for every believer. No matter how righteous we become, we are never free from the need for Allah's pardon and mercy.
Allah then reassures us with two of His most beautiful attributes: He is *Ghafūr* — the One whose forgiveness knows no bounds, who forgives again and again, and who does not grow tired of pardoning His servants no matter how often they stumble. And He is *Raḥīm* — the One whose mercy encompasses everything, who treats His servants with gentleness and kindness, and who delights in their return to Him.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
Dear believer, this verse is a door of hope opened wide for you. No matter how many mistakes you have made, no matter how heavy your sins may feel, Allah's forgiveness is greater. He does not say, "Seek forgiveness if you are perfect" — rather, He commands you to seek it in all your states, because His mercy is not limited by your failures. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand my soul is, if you did not commit sins, Allah would replace you with a people who would commit sins and then seek forgiveness, and He would forgive them." (Muslim)
So, make *istighfar* (seeking forgiveness) your daily bread — in the morning and evening, after every prayer, and in every moment of weakness. Let your tongue be moist with the remembrance of Allah's forgiveness, and let your heart be filled with hope in His mercy. For indeed, Allah is Ghafūr, Raḥīm — He is waiting for you to turn to Him, and when you do, He will not turn you away empty-handed.
