Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yuḥyī (يُحْيِي): He gives life — He brings the living into existence from the dead, and grants life to creation.
- Yumīt (يُمِيتُ): He causes death — He takes away life from the living, ending their worldly existence.
- Qaḍā amran (قَضَىٰ أَمْرًا): He decrees or decides a matter — His will is absolute, and nothing can oppose or alter His decree.
- Kun fayakūn (كُن فَيَكُون): "Be" and it is — a command that is instantly fulfilled without delay, effort, or resistance.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse declares the absolute and exclusive sovereignty of Allah over life and death. He alone is the One who grants life to all living beings, and He alone is the One who takes life away at the appointed time. No one shares this power with Him — neither prophets, nor angels, nor any created being. This is a profound reminder of human dependence on Allah and the reality that our existence is entirely in His hands.
The verse then moves to an even greater demonstration of His power: when Allah decrees a matter — whether it is the creation of the heavens and the earth, the resurrection of the dead, or any other affair — He merely says to it, "Be," and it comes into existence instantly. There is no delay, no obstacle, no intermediary, and no resistance. His command is immediate and absolute. This is the ultimate expression of divine omnipotence: the word "Be" is sufficient to bring anything from non-existence into existence.
This truth carries a powerful message for every believer. If Allah can create everything with a single word, then nothing is too difficult for Him — not the forgiveness of sins, not the answering of prayers, not the relief of distress, and not the resurrection of the dead on the Day of Judgment. So when you call upon Him, know that you are calling upon the One whose command is absolute and whose power knows no limits.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent reality: the same Allah who gives you life and will one day take it from you is the One who can transform your situation in an instant. If He says "Be" to a matter, it is — no matter how impossible it may seem to you. So never despair of His mercy, and never doubt His ability to answer your supplications. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, for He is the Living who never dies, the Omnipotent who never fails, and the Merciful who never turns away His servants when they call upon Him. Let this verse strengthen your faith, increase your trust in Allah, and fill your heart with hope — for with Him, all things are possible, and His promise is true.
