Surah Ghafir — Verse 79

Word Meanings:

• Al-An'am (الأنعام): Livestock, specifically the eight pairs mentioned in the Qur'an—camels, cattle, sheep, and goats.
• Li-tarkaboo minha (لِتَرْكَبُوا مِنْهَا): That you may ride upon some of them, such as camels.
• Wa minha ta'kuloon (وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ): And from some of them you eat, such as the meat of cattle, sheep, and goats.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah—alone, with no partner—is the One who created and subjected livestock for your benefit. He made them subservient to you out of His mercy and wisdom, so that you may ride on some of them, like camels, to travel across land and reach distant places, and so that you may eat the meat of others, like cattle, sheep, and goats. This is a manifestation of His immense favor upon you, as He provided these animals for your various needs—transportation, nourishment, and other benefits—while you have no power to create even a single one of them. Reflect on this blessing: He could have made these creatures wild and untamable, but He instilled in them obedience to you, making them a means of comfort and survival in this life.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear believer, pause and look around you. The animals you ride, the meat you eat, the milk you drink—all of these are gifts from your Lord, given freely out of His love for you. He did not ask for anything in return except that you remember Him and be grateful. How often do we take these blessings for granted, without a moment of thanks? Let this verse awaken your heart to the boundless mercy of Allah, who has made the earth and all that is in it a means of ease for you. When you mount an animal or enjoy a meal, let it remind you of His generosity, and let that gratitude draw you closer to Him. Indeed, the One who provides for you in this world is the same One who has prepared eternal bliss for His grateful servants in the Hereafter. So, turn to Him with a thankful heart, and you will find His blessings multiplied beyond your imagination.
