Surah Ash-Shura — Verse 39

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes a hallmark quality of the true believers—those who, when afflicted by oppression or injustice, do not remain passive or humiliated, nor do they resort to aggression. Instead, they rise to defend their honor and rights, standing firm against the wrongdoer. Their victory is not one of revenge or excess; it is a measured, just response that restores their dignity and upholds justice. They retaliate only to the extent of the harm inflicted upon them, never transgressing beyond what is fair. This is a praiseworthy trait, especially when the oppressor is not deserving of forgiveness, or when pardoning would not serve a greater good. However, the verse also implies that if they choose to forgive, their patience is rewarded abundantly by Allah, for forgiveness is even greater in merit when it leads to reconciliation and peace.

This quality reflects a balanced Islamic character: believers are not aggressors, but they are not weak either. They embody strength with justice, and mercy with wisdom. Islam teaches us to stand against oppression—whether directed at ourselves or others—and to never accept humiliation.
