Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mashriqayn (المشرقين): Literally means "the two easts" — referring to the distance between the east and the west, i.e., the farthest possible distance imaginable.
  • Al-Qareen (القرين): The companion — here, the devil (Shaytan) who was assigned to accompany the disbeliever in worldly life.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a vivid and sobering scene from the Day of Judgment. Allah tells us about the one who turned away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful — the one who ignored Allah's signs, rejected His messengers, and lived a life of heedlessness. On that Day, when this person is brought before Allah for reckoning, he will find himself accompanied by his inseparable companion: the devil who was assigned to him throughout his worldly life.

At that moment — when the reality of the Hereafter becomes undeniable and the consequences of his choices are laid bare — the disbeliever will turn to his devilish companion and cry out in deep regret: "Oh, I wish there were between me and you the distance of the east from the west!" He wishes for an impossible, unimaginable separation — as far apart as the two horizons — because he now realizes that this devil was his worst companion, the one who whispered evil into his heart, beautified sin for him, and led him down the path of destruction.

Then he exclaims: "What an evil companion!" — a declaration of disgust and remorse. But alas, this regret comes too late. The time for repentance has passed, and the separation he wishes for will never be granted.

This verse carries a profound lesson for us all: the company we keep in this world — whether physical or spiritual — has eternal consequences. The devil is a constant companion to those who turn away from Allah's remembrance. He does not force anyone; rather, he whispers, and the person willingly follows. When a person abandons the remembrance of Allah, the devil finds easy access to his heart, and gradually, he becomes a prisoner of his own evil companion.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a story about others — it is a mirror for every soul. Ask yourself: who is your companion in this life? Is it the remembrance of Allah, the Qur'an, and righteous deeds? Or is it the whispers of Shaytan, the distractions of this world, and the desires that lead you away from your Creator?

The good news is that you do not have to wait until the Day of Judgment to change your companion. Today, right now, you can turn back to Allah. Every time you say "A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim" (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil), you push that evil companion away. Every time you remember Allah, the devil flees. Every time you read the Qur'an, your heart becomes a fortress that Shaytan cannot penetrate.

Do not let the regret of this verse become your reality. The doors of repentance are open, and Allah's mercy is vast. He says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). Choose your companion wisely today, so that on the Day when you meet your Lord, you will be accompanied by the angels of mercy, not the devils of regret.

📜 Verse 36-40 — Az-Zukhruf

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
