Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a profound and reassuring command: "Ask those whom We sent before you from among Our messengers — did We ever appoint, besides the Most Merciful, gods to be worshipped?"

This is not a question born of doubt or uncertainty — far from it. Rather, it is a rhetorical question meant to establish an undeniable truth and to silence the polytheists of Makkah who claimed that their worship of idols and false deities was acceptable. The Prophet ﷺ is being told to consult the followers of the previous prophets — the Jews and Christians who had preserved the original scriptures and the teachings of their messengers — and they would all testify that no prophet ever came with a message calling to the worship of anything other than Allah alone.

Indeed, every single messenger — from Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and 'Isa (peace be upon them all) — was sent with the same core message: *"Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him"* (Qur'an 7:59). None of them ever sanctioned the worship of idols, angels, saints, or any created being. The unity of Allah (Tawheed) is the common thread running through all divine revelations.

Some scholars have noted that this verse also refers specifically to the night of the Prophet's journey to Jerusalem (Al-Isra), where he met and prayed with the previous prophets — and they all stood behind him in prayer, affirming his leadership and the truth of his message. This was a living testimony that all prophets were united upon the same path: pure monotheism.

The wisdom behind this verse is twofold: it comforts the Prophet ﷺ by confirming that his struggle against polytheism is the same struggle every prophet faced, and it serves as a decisive argument against the disbelievers of Makkah. If all previous scriptures and prophets called to the worship of Allah alone, then how could the Quraysh claim that their idolatrous practices were legitimate?

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. The message of Islam is not an innovation — it is the original and eternal message of all prophets. When you worship Allah alone, you are following the path of every righteous soul in history. When you reject false gods — whether they are idols of stone, wealth, status, or unchecked desires — you are embodying the very essence of faith.

Let this verse strengthen your conviction. The religion of Islam is built upon the purest foundation: the worship of the One True God, the Most Merciful, who created you, sustains you, and loves you more than a mother loves her child. He does not need your worship, but you desperately need His mercy and guidance.

So ask yourself: Are there any "gods" in your life that compete with Allah for your heart, your time, or your obedience? Purify your worship, and you will taste the sweetness of faith that every prophet and their true followers experienced. That is the path to true peace, both in this life and the next.

So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.
And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.
And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?
And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."
But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
