- Majnoon (مَجْنُون): Insane or possessed.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the narrative of a people who were given every chance to believe, yet they turned away from the truth with arrogance and false accusations. After a clear and truthful messenger came to them, delivering the divine message with clarity and wisdom, they did not respond with reflection or acceptance. Instead, they turned away from him, refusing to listen or engage with what he brought.
Their rejection was not based on any genuine doubt or intellectual inquiry. Rather, they resorted to baseless accusations, saying: "He is just a man taught by others" — claiming that the message he delivered was not from Allah, but rather learned from human teachers, or that he was influenced by others. Some among them went even further, saying: "He is mad" — dismissing his prophethood by claiming he was insane, a desperate attempt to undermine his credibility without addressing the substance of his call.
This verse highlights a profound truth about human nature: when people are determined to reject the truth, they will invent any excuse, no matter how contradictory or irrational. Notice how their accusations contradict one another — if he were truly being taught by others, he could not at the same time be insane. Such contradictions reveal that their words were not born of genuine reasoning, but of stubbornness and pride.
The verse also serves as a powerful reminder of the patience and perseverance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Despite facing such harsh and unjust accusations, he continued to deliver the message with gentleness and wisdom, never wavering in his mission. His character was so well-known among his people — they called him "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy) before his prophethood — that these accusations were clearly false and born of obstinacy.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect on the nature of truth and how we respond to it. When a person of known honesty and integrity brings a message of guidance, what is the appropriate response? Is it to dismiss them with baseless accusations, or to listen with an open heart and mind?
The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to use our intellect and reason. It challenges us to examine the evidence, to ponder the creation around us, and to recognize the signs of truth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known for his truthfulness and trustworthiness even before he received revelation. His life, character, and the profound wisdom of the Qur'an itself stand as enduring testimonies to the truth of his message.
Let us not be like those who turned away from the truth when it came to them. Instead, let us approach the message of Islam with sincerity, asking Allah to guide our hearts to what is right. For indeed, the one who seeks the truth with an honest heart will find that the light of guidance illuminates their path, and the peace that comes with faith is unlike anything this world can offer.
May Allah grant us the ability to recognize the truth and follow it, and may He protect us from the arrogance and stubbornness that led these people to reject their messenger.
