Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tamtarūn (تَمْتَرُونَ): You were in doubt and uncertainty; you disputed and disbelieved in its occurrence.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This statement is addressed to the inhabitants of Hellfire on the Day of Judgment, as they are being seized by the angels and dragged toward the scorching punishment. They are told: "Indeed, this [punishment] is what you used to doubt." That is, this painful torment that you are now experiencing firsthand is the very reality you once questioned and denied in the worldly life. You were not certain of it; you wavered in your hearts, saying, "When will this Day come?" and "Is it true?" Now, the veil has been lifted, and you see with your own eyes what you once rejected. The doubt that clouded your minds has vanished, replaced by an undeniable, bitter certainty—but certainty at this moment brings no benefit, for the time for faith and repentance has passed.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

O beloved reader, how many of us live heedless of this Day, treating it as a distant tale rather than an imminent reality? Yet the Qur'an repeatedly awakens our hearts, reminding us that this life is but a fleeting moment, and the Hereafter is the true, everlasting abode. Do not wait until you see the punishment with your own eyes to believe—for then, belief will be of no avail. Embrace the truth now, while the door of repentance is open, and let your certainty in the Hereafter transform your actions. For the believer who lives with conviction, every prayer, every act of kindness, and every step toward righteousness becomes a light that guides them through the darkness of this world and into the eternal gardens of Paradise. Let this verse be a gentle yet firm reminder: the Day will surely come, and those who prepared for it will rejoice, while those who doubted will taste the fruit of their denial. Choose certainty today, and let it be the compass of your life.
