Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ذُقْ (Thuq): Taste — a command to experience something directly.
- الْعَزِيزُ (Al-ʿAzīz): The Almighty, the Honorable, the Mighty — one who is powerful and invincible.
- الْكَرِيمُ (Al-Karīm): The Generous, the Noble — one who is esteemed and honored among his people.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a direct address to the wicked, sinful person who, in the life of this world, lived in arrogance and self-importance. On the Day of Judgment, it will be said to him, in a tone of severe mockery and rebuke: "Taste this painful punishment now! You are the one who claimed to be mighty and noble among your people. Where is your power now? Where is your honor?" This is a form of humiliation and derision — reminding him that the status and prestige he once enjoyed in the worldly life have vanished completely, leaving him utterly powerless and humiliated in the face of Allah's justice.
The verse carries a profound lesson: the false sense of power and nobility that a person may possess in this world is fleeting and meaningless before the eternal reality of the Hereafter. The very attributes he boasted about — his might and his honor — are now turned against him as a source of shame and torment. The mockery lies in the fact that these qualities, which he once used to oppress others and deny the truth, now serve only to increase his suffering and disgrace.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful scene. How many people today walk the earth with pride, arrogance, and a sense of false superiority? They may have wealth, status, or influence — but what will all of that avail them when they stand before their Lord? This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that true honor and true might belong to Allah alone. He is Al-ʿAzīz (the Almighty) and Al-Karīm (the Most Generous) in the truest sense. Whoever seeks honor should seek it through obedience to Allah and adherence to His guidance.
Let this verse inspire you to turn back to your Creator with humility and sincerity. Do not be deceived by the temporary glitter of this world. The Qur'an is a mercy and a guide — it calls you to success in this life and the next. Embrace it, act upon it, and you will find true honor that never fades and a nobility that never ends. May Allah grant us all the wisdom to see the truth and the strength to follow it.
