Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Rusul (الرُّسُل): The Messengers of Allah, may peace be upon them all.
- Mādhā ujibtum (مَاذَا أُجِبْتُمْ): "What answer were you given?" — i.e., how did your nations respond to your call?
- Lā ʿilma lanā (لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا): "We have no knowledge" — a declaration of their complete reliance on Allah’s knowledge alone.
- ʿAllām al-Ghuyūb (عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ): The All-Knower of the unseen — He alone knows what is hidden in hearts and what will unfold in the future.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O people, remember the Day of Resurrection — a day of immense awe and majesty — when Allah will gather all His Messengers, from the first to the last, and address them with a question that carries profound weight: "What answer were you given by your nations when you called them to the worship of Allah alone and to obedience to His commands?" This question is not because Allah, Glorified be He, is unaware of what happened — far be it from Him — but rather to establish the ultimate proof against the nations and to manifest His justice before all of creation.
The Messengers, peace be upon them, will respond with utmost humility and reverence: "We have no knowledge." They mean: we have no knowledge comparable to Your knowledge, O Lord. We only witnessed what our nations showed us outwardly — some believed and some rejected — but we do not know what truly lay hidden in their hearts, what they concealed of hypocrisy, or what they did after we left them. They then affirm: "Indeed, You alone are the All-Knower of the unseen." You know what we knew and what we did not know; You know the secrets of every soul, the intentions behind every deed, and the fate of every nation after our time among them.
This scene teaches us a profound lesson: even the greatest of Allah’s creation — the Messengers — declare their complete submission to Allah’s infinite knowledge. How then can we, as ordinary human beings, claim to know everything or judge others based on appearances alone? Truly, Allah alone is the Judge of what is hidden and what is manifest.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse opens a window into the Day when all accounts will be settled. Imagine standing before your Lord, being asked about how you responded to His messengers and His message. The Messengers themselves disclaim any knowledge beyond what Allah grants them — so how careful must we be with our own deeds and intentions? Let this verse awaken in you a sincere desire to respond to Allah’s call with faith and obedience, to purify your heart from hypocrisy, and to live each day as one who knows that nothing is hidden from the All-Knower of the unseen. The Qur’an is not merely a book to be read — it is a guide to be lived. Let this scene motivate you to be among those who answer the call of the Messengers with truth and sincerity, so that on that Day, you may be among the successful.
