Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, when your mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer) raises his voice with the beautiful words of the Adhān—proclaiming the greatness of Allah, the oneness of His Lordship, and the call to success and salvation—some among the People of the Book (the Jews and Christians) and the polytheists respond not with reverence, but with scorn and jest. They treat this noble call as if it were a joke or a game, laughing at it and belittling it. They do this because their hearts are sealed with ignorance and their minds are devoid of true comprehension. Had they possessed even a glimmer of intellect, they would have realized that this call is an invitation to the very purpose of their existence—to worship their Creator, to find peace in submission to Him, and to attain success in this life and the Hereafter. But because they have turned away from the truth and refused to reflect, they mock what is most sacred.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder for us: the call to prayer is not merely a ritual; it is a divine summons to draw near to Allah, to purify our souls, and to connect with our Lord five times a day. When we hear the Adhān, let us respond with haste and reverence, for it is a treasure that the mockers of old could never appreciate. And let us be grateful that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has guided us to honor what others despise. Indeed, the greatest loss is to be among those who, lacking intellect, mock the very path that leads to eternal bliss. So cherish the Adhān, answer it with your heart and your feet, and let it be a source of light in your life—for it is a call that the wise answer, and the foolish only ridicule.
