📖 English Meaning
Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Taqeemoo" (تُقِيمُوا) – To establish, uphold, and act upon something in its full and proper manner, not merely to read or believe in it superficially.
  • "At-Tawrah wal-Injeel" (التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِيلَ) – The Torah (revealed to Moses) and the Gospel (revealed to Jesus), peace be upon them both.
  • "Ma unzila ilaykum min Rabbikum" (وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ) – What has been sent down to you from your Lord, which includes the Quran revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final and confirming scripture.
  • "Tughyanan" (طُغْيَانًا) – Transgression, arrogance, and exceeding all bounds in rebellion.
  • "Kufran" (كُفْرًا) – Disbelief and denial of the truth.
  • "La ta'sa" (لَا تَأْسَ) – Do not grieve or feel sorrow.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah commands His Messenger (peace be upon him) to address the People of the Book—the Jews and Christians—with a decisive and clarifying statement: "You are not upon anything"—meaning, you have no valid ground in religion, no true standing before Allah, and your claims to faith are empty—until you truly establish and act upon the Torah and the Gospel, and upon what has been sent down to you from your Lord, which includes the Quran.

Establishing these scriptures means more than mere recitation or selective application. It means believing in them fully, implementing their laws and teachings, and—crucially—recognizing that all of them, in their original form, testified to the coming of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and commanded belief in him and obedience to him. The Torah and Gospel were not sent to be a final word, but to herald the final Messenger. Therefore, whoever claims to uphold them while rejecting him has, in truth, abandoned them entirely. Their religion is null and void without this essential belief.

Then Allah reveals a profound truth about human nature: the revelation sent down to the Prophet (peace be upon him)—the Quran—only increases many of them in transgression and disbelief. Why? Because of their envy and arrogance. Instead of humbling themselves before the clear truth, they harden their hearts and sink deeper into rebellion, seeing the success of Islam as a threat to their worldly status and false pride.

Finally, Allah consoles His Prophet (peace be upon him): "Do not grieve over the disbelieving people." This is a divine reassurance that the Prophet's mission is not dependent on their acceptance. The believers who follow him are a sufficient community, and their faith is a source of strength and honor. The rejection of the obstinate should never cause despair, for the truth stands firm regardless of how many turn away from it.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a timeless message for all of us. It teaches us that faith is not a label we carry or a heritage we claim—it is a living reality that must be established through action, sincerity, and submission to Allah's complete guidance. The People of the Book were told they had nothing until they acted upon their scriptures, and this applies to us as well. We are not "upon anything" merely by calling ourselves Muslims; we must establish the Quran in our lives—reading it, understanding it, and implementing its commands in our hearts, homes, and societies.

Moreover, the verse reminds us not to be shaken by those who reject the truth or grow more hostile when it is presented to them. Their reaction is not a reflection of the truth's weakness, but of their own spiritual illness. As believers, we should find comfort and strength in our community of faith, and we should strive to be among those who truly establish Allah's word—not just in claim, but in character, worship, and conduct. For the one who upholds Allah's revelation will never be "upon nothing"; rather, they will be upon the firmest foundation that nothing in this world can shake.

📜 Verse 66-70 — Al-Maidah

And if only they upheld [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them are a moderate community, but many of them - evil is that which they do.
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muhammad] and those [before Him] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not desire, a party [of messengers] they denied, and another party they killed.
