Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Halalan (حَلَالًا): That which is lawful and permissible according to the Shariah.
- Tayyiban (طَيِّبًا): That which is pure, wholesome, and good — free from any form of harm or impurity.
- Ittaqū (اتَّقُوا): Fear Allah, be conscious of Him, and fulfill His commands while avoiding His prohibitions.
Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, Allah calls you to enjoy the vast and generous provisions He has granted you — but with a condition: that what you consume is both *halal* (lawful) and *tayyib* (pure and wholesome). This means you are to seek your sustenance through legitimate means, avoiding anything acquired through unlawful channels such as theft, usurpation, deception, or any transaction that Allah has forbidden. The food you eat, the wealth you earn, and the blessings you enjoy should all be clean and pure — for what enters your body and your household shapes your soul and your deeds.
Then Allah connects this command to the essence of faith itself: "And fear Allah, in whom you believe." This is a profound reminder — your belief in Allah is not merely a verbal declaration; it is a living reality that demands your consciousness of Him at every moment. If you truly believe in His oneness, His knowledge of all things, and His ultimate justice, then this faith must manifest in how you eat, how you earn, and how you live. Faith is not separate from daily life — it is the very lens through which you should view every morsel of food and every act of worship.
A Call to the Believers:
Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful invitation — Allah does not forbid you from enjoying His blessings; rather, He wants you to enjoy them in a way that brings you closer to Him. The lawful and pure provision is not a restriction; it is a protection. When you eat halal, your body is nourished with goodness, your heart is illuminated, and your prayers are answered. When you eat haram, even if it tastes sweet in the moment, it darkens the heart and distances you from your Lord.
So let your faith be your guide. Let your belief in Allah — the One who created you, sustains you, and knows your every secret — be the reason you pause before every bite and every transaction. Ask yourself: Is this halal? Is this pure? Is this pleasing to my Lord? For the believer who eats with taqwa (God-consciousness) is not merely feeding his body — he is feeding his soul with obedience, and that is the greatest nourishment of all.
And know that Allah, who has given you this beautiful faith, will never abandon you when you strive to live by it. He is the Provider, the Sustainer, and the Most Merciful — and He loves to see His servants enjoy His blessings with gratitude and reverence. So eat of what He has given you, be grateful, and let your faith shine through every aspect of your life.
