Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghafalah (غَفْلَةٍ): Heedlessness or neglect — a state of being unmindful of the truth and the reality of the Hereafter.
- Ghitā' (غِطَاءَكَ): Your covering — the veil that obscured the heart from perceiving the truth.
- Hadīd (حَدِيدٌ): Sharp and piercing — meaning the sight has become intensely penetrating and clear.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day of Resurrection, it will be said to the heedless soul: "Indeed, you were in a state of utter neglect regarding this Day — you were distracted by worldly desires, pleasures, and the pursuit of temporary gains, never truly reflecting upon the reality of what was to come. You lived as though this moment would never arrive."
Then Allah says: "But We have now removed your covering from you." This refers to the veil of heedlessness that blinded the heart in the worldly life — the veil that prevented the disbeliever from seeing the truth of faith and the terrors of the Hereafter. Now, with the cover lifted, the reality is fully exposed before their eyes.
And so: "Your sight today is sharp." On this Day, the eyes perceive with absolute clarity what was once denied or ignored. The person now sees the truth of resurrection, the reality of accountability, and the consequences of their deeds — but this vision comes too late for it to benefit them, for the time of action has passed.
This verse carries a profound lesson: the veil of heedlessness is lifted only at the moment when it can no longer serve as a means of correction. The sharpness of sight on that Day is a painful clarity — a clarity that brings regret, not redemption.
Da'wah Reflection:
O beloved reader! This verse is a gentle yet powerful wake-up call from your Lord. The heedlessness you may feel today is not permanent — but the question is: will you wait until the covering is forcibly removed on a Day when sight becomes sharp but useless for repentance? Or will you remove the veil yourself, here and now, through sincere reflection, seeking knowledge, and turning back to Allah?
The Qur'an was sent precisely to remove this covering from your heart while there is still time. Every verse you recite, every moment you ponder over the creation of the heavens and the earth, every tear you shed in sincere repentance — these are the means by which Allah, in His infinite mercy, lifts the veil from your heart in this life, so that you may see clearly and act rightly.
Do not wait for the Day when sight becomes sharp but hope is lost. Open your eyes today, while the Book of Allah and the guidance of His Prophet ﷺ are within your reach. Let your heart awaken now, so that when you meet your Lord, you meet Him not with regret, but with the joy of a believer who saw the truth and followed it.
