Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ākhidhīna (آخِذِينَ): Taking, receiving, or accepting with full willingness and contentment.
- Mā ātāhum (مَا آتَاهُمْ): What their Lord has given them — referring to the immense rewards and bounties of Paradise.
- Muḥsinīn (مُحْسِنِينَ): Those who excel in goodness — performing deeds with sincerity, excellence, and perfection, as if seeing Allah, knowing that He sees them.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the righteous — those who feared Allah and lived their lives in conscious awareness of Him. They are the ones who, on the Day of Resurrection, will be in magnificent gardens with flowing springs, and their Lord will grant them everything their hearts desire. The verse tells us that they take what their Lord gives them — not with hesitation or reluctance, but with complete joy, satisfaction, and open-hearted acceptance. There is nothing in what they receive that could cause disappointment, for it is pure, perfect, and beyond imagination.
The verse then reveals the secret behind this immense honor: "Indeed, they were before that doers of good." Their reward was not random or undeserved — it was the natural fruit of their deeds in this worldly life. They were people who perfected their actions: they prayed with humility, gave charity with sincerity, spoke with truth, treated others with kindness, and fulfilled their obligations to Allah and to His creation. They did not merely do good deeds — they did them with excellence (iḥsān), as if they were seeing Allah, for even though they could not see Him, they knew with certainty that He saw them.
This is a profound lesson for every believer: the gardens of Paradise are not entered by wishful thinking alone, but by sincere, consistent, and excellent deeds performed in this life. The Qur'an beautifully links the eternal reward to the temporal effort — what you sow in this world, you reap in the next. The righteous did not wait for Paradise to begin their goodness; they began it here, in the midst of trials, temptations, and distractions, and Allah honored them with what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever conceived.
A Call to Action:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken in you a beautiful ambition. You do not need to be perfect — you need to be sincere and consistent. Every good deed you do today, no matter how small, is a seed planted for your eternal garden. Every prayer prayed with presence of heart, every dollar given in charity, every kind word spoken, every sin avoided for the sake of Allah — all of it is being recorded, and all of it will return to you on a Day when you will need it most.
The righteous people described in this verse were not angels — they were human beings like you and me, who struggled, who faced challenges, but who never gave up on doing good. They made excellence their habit and sincerity their companion. And look at how Allah honored them! He gave them a reward that made them take it with joy and gratitude.
So, begin today. Begin now. Do not wait for tomorrow, for tomorrow is not guaranteed. Make excellence your goal in every action — in your worship, your work, your relationships, and your character. And trust that Allah, the Most Generous, never wastes the effort of those who do good. He sees your struggle, He knows your sincerity, and He has prepared for you what will make you forget every hardship you ever faced.
May Allah make us among the muḥsinīn, and may He grant us the joy of taking His rewards with hearts full of gratitude and contentment.
