- Bijlin samīn (بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ): A fat, plump calf — indicating a generous and high-quality offering.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the noble story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his honored guests — the angels sent by Allah. When Ibrahim noticed that his guests did not extend their hands to eat the roasted calf he had placed before them, he felt a subtle unease. Yet, true to his generous and hospitable nature, he did not hesitate to serve them even more.
The verse tells us that Ibrahim quietly and secretly slipped away to his family, without making a fuss or drawing attention to his movements. He went to prepare the finest meal he could offer. He chose a fat, healthy calf — not a lean or weak one — and slaughtered it, roasted it, and brought it to his guests. This was not just any meal; it was a feast prepared from the best of what he owned, reflecting his deep generosity and noble character.
Ibrahim’s action here demonstrates a beautiful lesson in hospitality: he did not burden his guests with the details of preparation, nor did he make them feel like a burden. Instead, he served them with excellence and subtlety, hoping they would eat and enjoy. He even gently invited them to eat, as mentioned in the following verses, showing his warmth and care.
This scene also highlights the character of a true believer: one who gives freely, serves others with sincerity, and treats guests with the utmost honor — all while maintaining humility and grace. It reminds us that hospitality is a sign of faith and a means of drawing closer to Allah, for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest."
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse invites us to reflect on our own conduct with others. Imagine the generosity of a prophet who, despite being a guest himself in this world, rushed to serve his visitors with the finest food he had. How often do we offer the best of what we have — our time, our wealth, our kindness — to those around us? Let this beautiful scene inspire us to be people of generosity and warmth, to welcome others with open hearts, and to remember that every act of kindness, no matter how small, is cherished by Allah. For in serving His creation, we serve our Creator, and in honoring guests, we honor the teachings of His beloved Messenger (peace be upon him). May Allah make us among those who give freely and love for others what they love for themselves.
