Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Fa-qarrabahu" (فَقَرَّبَهُ): He brought it near or placed it close to them.
  • "Alā ta'kulūn" (أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ): A gentle, encouraging question meaning "Will you not eat?" — phrased as an invitation with a tone of polite wonder.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the noble guest — the angels sent by Allah in human form — arrived at the home of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and greeted him with peace, he welcomed them warmly. He slipped away quietly to his family and prepared a generous feast for them. He slaughtered a fat, tender calf, roasted it over fire until it was perfectly cooked, and then placed it before them as a sign of hospitality and honor.

Yet, when he presented the food, he noticed that they did not reach out to eat. So he gently and kindly said: "Will you not eat?" — not as a rebuke, but as a soft encouragement, inviting them to partake of the meal he had lovingly prepared. This reflects the noble character of Prophet Ibrahim: he did not embarrass his guests or question them harshly, but rather used a tender, courteous tone to make them feel at ease.

This verse beautifully illustrates the Islamic etiquette of hospitality: preparing the best for guests, presenting it with warmth, and inviting them to eat with kindness and gentleness — never with pressure or reproach. It also shows the deep care and generosity embedded in the character of Allah's chosen prophets, who embodied the highest moral standards in every interaction.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This scene from the life of Prophet Ibrahim teaches us that true faith is not merely in words but in action — in how we treat others, especially our guests. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest." Here, we see the father of the prophets practicing this with perfection. Let us strive to emulate this beautiful sunnah: to welcome others with open hearts, offer the best we have, and speak with gentleness that makes people feel cherished rather than judged. Such manners are a powerful means of drawing hearts closer to Islam, for kindness is a language all souls understand.
