Word Meanings:

  • Shā‘ir (شَاعِرٌ): A poet — used here dismissively, implying that the Qur’an is mere poetry and not divine revelation.
  • Natarabbaṣ (نَّتَرَبَّصُ): We wait and watch for something to happen, with anticipation.
  • Rayb al-Manūn (رَيْبَ الْمَنُون): The vicissitudes of time, the turns of fate, or the calamities of death — specifically, the unpredictable events that lead to one’s end.

Explanation of the Verse:

The disbelievers of Makkah, in their stubbornness and denial, said about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “He is just a poet — let us wait and see. Time will do its work; death will strike him, and we will finally be rid of him and his message.” They thought that by simply waiting, the passage of days and the inevitable fate of all mortals would silence him, just as it had silenced other poets before him. They saw his words as nothing more than poetic eloquence, and his mission as a passing phase that would fade with his life.

But how blind was their reasoning! They failed to see that the One who sent him is the Eternal, the Ever-Living, who controls life and death, and who grants victory to His messengers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not a poet seeking fame or fortune — he was a bearer of divine truth, and his message was not bound to his lifespan. The Qur’an itself is a living miracle that transcends time, and its light continues to shine long after its first listeners have passed.

Dear reader, reflect on this: those who reject the truth often console themselves with false hopes — “wait and see,” they say, “this too shall pass.” But the truth of Allah does not pass; it endures. The disbelievers waited, and what did they see? They saw Islam spread, the Prophet’s mission triumph, and the very words they mocked become the guidance for billions. Their waiting was in vain, for Allah’s promise is sure, and His help is near.

So let this verse be a reminder: do not be deceived by the temporary circumstances of this world. The truth may face opposition, but it never dies. And for those who wait for the truth to fail, the only “rayb al-manūn” (turn of fate) that will come to them is the realization of their own loss — in this life and the next. Turn to Allah now, before the vicissitudes of time turn against you, and embrace the message that will never fade.

29فَذَكِّرْ فَمَا أَنتَ بِنِعْمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ
So remind [O Muhammad], for you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a soothsayer or a madman.

Say, "Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among the waiters."
32أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَامُهُم بِهَٰذَا ۚ أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ
