- Fatadalla (فَتَدَلَّى): Descended further, came even closer, hanging over or leaning down toward the one being approached.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the awe-inspiring encounter between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the angel Jibreel (Gabriel, peace be upon him) during the event of the Ascension (Mi'raj). After Jibreel had appeared in his true, magnificent form filling the horizon, the verse tells us that he then drew nearer to the Prophet, and then came even closer still. This was not a mere casual approach; it was a deliberate, profound closeness that signaled the immense significance of what was about to take place. The Prophet was being prepared to receive a direct and weighty communication from his Lord. This closeness was not physical in the way we understand human proximity, but rather a spiritual and divine drawing near that elevated the Prophet to a station of honour no other creation had reached. The very next verses will describe just how close this was — the distance of two bow-lengths or even less — a closeness that is beyond our human imagination but which Allah chose to describe for us so we may grasp the greatness of this moment. This was a moment of pure revelation, where the veils between the Creator and His chosen servant were lifted to a degree that defies description.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a powerful reminder of Allah's immense love and care for His creation. He did not leave us without guidance; rather, He sent His most honoured angel to His most beloved Prophet to deliver a message of mercy, hope, and salvation. The fact that Jibreel drew so close to the Prophet symbolises how accessible Allah's guidance is to those who sincerely seek it. Just as the angel descended to bring the Qur'an, so too does Allah's mercy descend upon the hearts of believers who turn to Him in prayer, reflection, and obedience. This verse should fill our hearts with longing — if the Prophet was honoured with such closeness, then we too can draw near to Allah through our worship, our sincerity, and our love for His Messenger. The doors of divine nearness are open to every believer who strives; the Prophet's journey was unique, but the invitation to draw close to Allah is extended to all of humanity until the end of time. Let this verse inspire you to take a step towards Allah today — for when you move towards Him, He moves towards you with mercy, forgiveness, and love beyond measure.
