Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qāba (قَابَ): The measure or distance of something, meaning the extent or span.
  • Qawsayn (قَوْسَيْنِ): Two bows (the plural dual form of "qaws," meaning bow, as in an archer's bow). It refers to a specific unit of distance.
  • Aw adnā (أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ): "Or even closer" — meaning the proximity was not merely equal to two bows, but possibly even nearer than that.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes the extraordinary closeness that occurred between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) during the event of ascension (Mi'raj) or the descent of revelation. After Gabriel had appeared to the Prophet in his true, magnificent form at the highest horizon, he then drew nearer to him. The distance between them became so remarkably close that it was equivalent to the length of two bows placed end to end — or even less than that. This is not a literal measurement of physical distance in the way we measure earthly spaces, but rather a profound expression of the intimate and direct nature of the divine communication that was about to take place. It signifies the extreme honor and closeness bestowed upon the Prophet, preparing him to receive the sacred revelation directly from Allah through Gabriel. The phrase "or even closer" emphasizes that no barrier remained between the messenger and the message — the connection was complete, absolute, and beyond human imagination.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a testament to the immense honor Allah bestowed upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Imagine the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all worlds, drawing His chosen servant so close that the distance became unimaginably small! This closeness was not for the Prophet's sake alone — it was a gift for all of humanity. Through this proximity, the final and complete guidance was delivered, a guidance that illuminates every corner of life and leads to eternal success. When you read this verse, let your heart fill with love for the Prophet who carried this trust, and with gratitude to Allah who brought this mercy to you. This is your invitation to draw closer to your Lord as well — through prayer, through the Qur'an, through sincere supplication. Just as the Prophet was brought near, you too can experience a spiritual closeness to Allah that transforms your heart, calms your soul, and guides your steps. The door of nearness is open to every believer who seeks it with sincerity.
