Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse takes us to a dramatic moment in the story of the people of Thamud, who were given a miraculous sign from Allah: a blessed she-camel that came out of a rock as a test for them. Despite the warnings of their prophet Salih (peace be upon him), their arrogance and stubbornness only grew. They plotted to kill the she-camel, and in this verse, we see the execution of their evil plan.
When the time came, they did not act individually out of courage; rather, they called upon their most wretched and wicked companion—the one who was most defiant and ready to commit the crime. He responded to their call, took his sword, and slaughtered the she-camel, cutting her hamstrings until she fell to the ground and died. This act was not merely the killing of an animal; it was a direct challenge to the command of Allah and a rejection of His prophet's message.
The verse captures the collective guilt of the community: they all shared in the crime because they encouraged, supported, and celebrated it. The one who carried out the act was merely their tool, but the sin was upon all of them. This is a powerful lesson for humanity: when a society agrees upon evil and facilitates it, the entire society bears the responsibility, not just the one who physically commits the deed.
The aftermath is known: Allah's punishment descended upon them swiftly and severely—a single mighty blast that destroyed them all, leaving them like dried, crushed straw. Their wealth, their strength, and their numbers could not protect them from the consequence of defying their Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. A people who had been given miracles, who had seen the she-camel emerge from solid rock as a living proof of Allah's power, still chose to destroy it out of arrogance and spite. They thought they were harming Allah's sign, but in truth, they were only harming themselves.
This story carries a timeless warning: do not let pride and stubbornness blind you to the truth. When Allah sends guidance, whether through His Book, His messengers, or the signs in the universe, the wise response is humility and submission, not defiance. The Thamud had every chance to believe, yet they chose destruction.
But there is also a beautiful lesson of hope: Allah always gives His servants chances to repent before punishment comes. Salih warned them, gave them time, and reminded them of Allah's blessings. Likewise, you are alive today, breathing, reading these words—this is your chance to turn to Allah, to embrace His mercy, and to follow His guidance. Do not wait until the signs of punishment appear, for when Allah's decree comes, no soul can escape it.
Let the story of the she-camel be a reminder that Allah's signs are not to be mocked or rejected. Open your heart to the Qur'an, for it is the greatest sign that remains with us today. Every verse is a light, every command is a mercy, and every warning is a shield. Respond to your Lord's call before it is too late, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
