Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ālā’ (آلاء): The countless blessings, favours, and bounties of Allah.
  • Tukadhdhibān (تُكَذِّبَانِ): You both deny or reject — addressed to the two creations: mankind (ins) and jinn.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a powerful rhetorical question directed at both humans and jinn: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?" It is a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, appearing after each reminder of Allah’s magnificent favours — from the creation of the heavens and the earth, to the sun and moon, to the provision of food, water, and the very breath in your lungs.

The question is not seeking an answer; rather, it is a challenge that leaves the listener speechless. When you reflect on the blessings of Allah — the air you breathe without cost, the heart that beats without your command, the earth that yields its fruits, the mercy that forgives sins, the guidance that leads to Paradise — how could any rational being deny even one of them? The verse humbles the arrogant, awakens the heedless, and invites every soul to acknowledge that every good thing in existence flows from the generosity of the Most Merciful.

This repetition throughout the surah serves as a gentle yet profound call to gratitude. It reminds you, O human and O jinn, that your very existence is a favour, your sustenance is a favour, your ability to hear this Qur’an is a favour, and your opportunity to repent and return to Allah is the greatest favour of all. The verse stirs the heart to ask: after all this love and care from your Creator, how could you repay Him with denial and ingratitude?

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and count even a single blessing — your eyesight, your health, your family, your faith. Each one is a treasure beyond price, given freely by a Lord who asks nothing in return but your gratitude and obedience. The verse is an invitation to open your heart: do not be among those who see the blessings yet deny the Giver. Embrace Islam, submit to the One who has showered you with favours, and let your tongue and your life testify: "We believe, and we are grateful." For the One who blessed you in this world is the same One who has prepared for His grateful servants a Paradise beyond imagination — so which of His blessings could you ever deny?
