Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • An-Najm (النَّجْم): In this context, it refers to plants that grow on the ground without a trunk or stem, such as herbs and small vegetation.
  • Ash-Shajar (الشَّجَر): Trees that have a visible trunk and firm branches, which remain standing through the seasons.
  • Yasjudan (يَسْجُدَانِ): They prostrate — meaning they submit, humble themselves, and are fully obedient to Allah’s command.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this majestic verse, Allah draws our attention to the plants and trees that cover the earth. He tells us that both the lowly herbs and the towering trees "prostrate" to Him. This prostration is not like the physical act of worship performed by humans and angels; rather, it is the prostration of submission and obedience. Every plant and tree, from the smallest blade of grass to the mightiest oak, is completely subservient to Allah’s will. They follow the natural laws He has decreed for them — they grow, spread their roots, stretch toward the sun, and provide countless benefits to humanity and all living creatures. Their very existence is an act of worship, as they fulfill the purpose for which they were created.

The shade they cast, the fruits they bear, the oxygen they release, and the beauty they add to the world — all of this is part of their silent, continuous prostration before their Creator. They do not rebel against His command, nor do they ever deviate from the role He has assigned them. This is a profound sign for those who reflect: if these creatures, which have no intellect or free will, submit so completely to Allah, how much more should we — who have been given reason, understanding, and choice — willingly bow in gratitude and obedience to our Lord?

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and look around you. Every tree you see, every plant you pass by, is engaged in an act of worship that never ceases. They are constant reminders of the Creator’s power and mercy. When you witness the greenery of the earth, let it inspire you to submit your heart to Allah with the same humility and devotion. Just as the plants obey their Lord without question, let your life be a living prostration — through prayer, through kindness, through honesty, and through gratitude. The universe around you is a book of signs, and this verse is a key to understanding that everything in creation glorifies its Maker. Will you not join them in that glorious chorus of submission?
