Translation — Tafsir

Key Words:

  • Al-Samaa (ٱلسَّمَآءَ): The sky/heavens — the celestial expanse above us.
  • Rafaʿahā (رَفَعَهَا): He raised it high — lifted it without visible pillars.
  • Al-Mīzān (ٱلْمِيزَانَ): The balance/scale — symbolizing justice, fairness, and equity.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) draws our attention to two magnificent realities: the physical and the moral. He says: *"And the heaven He raised high, and He placed the balance."*

First, Allah reminds us of His supreme power in creation — He raised the sky above us, a vast, flawless canopy without any pillars to support it, as a sign of His infinite might and wisdom. This celestial structure is not merely decorative; it serves countless purposes for the benefit of humanity — from the sun and moon that regulate our days and seasons, to the atmosphere that protects and sustains life on Earth. The raising of the heavens is a testament to Allah's perfect design and His care for His creation.

Then, immediately after mentioning this physical elevation, Allah turns our attention to a moral and social elevation: *"and He placed the balance."* This refers to the principle of justice and fairness that Allah has established and commanded among His servants. Just as the sky is raised high with perfect order, so too must human affairs be conducted with perfect justice. The "balance" here symbolizes the scales of equity — in our words, our dealings, our judgments, and our relationships. Allah has instilled in human nature an innate sense of right and wrong, and He has sent His messengers with clear guidance to establish justice on Earth.

The juxtaposition of these two elements is deeply meaningful: the physical raising of the sky demonstrates Allah's power, while the placing of the balance demonstrates His mercy and justice. The One who perfectly ordered the universe has also ordered how we should live with one another — in fairness, truth, and balance.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, look up at the sky and marvel at its perfection — then look within yourself and ask: am I living in balance? Am I fair in my dealings with others, as Allah is fair in His creation? The same Lord who raised the heavens without pillars has placed a scale of justice within your heart and within His revelation. Embrace this divine balance — it is the path to peace in this life and salvation in the next. Let the harmony of the universe inspire you to bring harmony to your own soul and to your community. Islam is a religion of balance — between this world and the next, between mercy and firmness, between rights and responsibilities. Walk that path with confidence, for the One who set the heavens in order has also set the way for your success.

📜 Verse 5-9 — Ar-Rahman

The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation,
And the stars and trees prostrate.
And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance
That you not transgress within the balance.
And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.
