Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals the profound wisdom behind why Allah permits the deceptive whispers and embellished falsehoods of the devil and his allies to spread among people. The purpose is that the hearts of those who deny the Hereafter—who do not believe in resurrection, accountability, or eternal reward and punishment—should incline toward this hollow, glittering speech. They are drawn to it because it aligns with their worldly desires and their rejection of divine truth. Their hearts willingly accept it, finding comfort in its false promises, and they embrace it as their chosen path.
Then, the verse concludes with a chilling consequence: "and that they may commit what they are committing." This means they will continue to earn and accumulate sins—disbelief, arrogance, and transgression—until their fate is sealed. The verse serves as a stern warning: these people are not merely victims of deception; they are active participants who, by their own choice, cling to falsehood and persist in wrongdoing. Their hearts are not forced to incline; rather, they willingly turn away from truth and gravitate toward what pleases their lower desires.
For the believer, this verse is a call to vigilance and gratitude. It reminds us that faith in the Hereafter is a shield—it protects the heart from being swayed by glittering falsehood and keeps us anchored to the truth, even when falsehood appears attractive. The one who truly believes in the Day of Judgment sees beyond the temporary allure of this world and recognizes that every deed, hidden or open, will be weighed on the scales of justice. So let us thank Allah for the gift of faith, and let us strive to purify our hearts so they incline only toward what pleases Him—for the heart that is firmly rooted in the Hereafter will never be deceived by the fleeting ornaments of this life.
