Word Meanings:

  • Māl (مال): Wealth, property, or possessions.
  • Banīn (بنين): Sons, children (specifically male offspring, which were considered a source of pride and strength in the Arab society of that time).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse exposes the underlying reason behind the arrogance and stubbornness of a particular type of person described in the preceding verses—one who is quick to swear oaths, is base and ignoble, slanders others, spreads mischief through tale-bearing, withholds good, transgresses all bounds, is steeped in sin, and is cruel and mean-spirited. The verse states that such a person behaves this way simply because he has been given wealth and sons.

His material blessings—his riches and his children—became the very source of his downfall. Instead of these gifts making him grateful to his Lord, they filled him with pride, self-importance, and a false sense of superiority. He looked down upon the truth and those who called him to it, believing that his worldly status was proof of his worth and that the message of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was beneath him.

This is a profound lesson for every believer: worldly provisions are a test, not a trophy. When a person allows wealth and family to inflate their ego, they blind themselves to the truth and turn away from the guidance of Allah. The Quran reminds us that these blessings are fleeting, and true honor lies not in what we own, but in our humility and obedience to our Creator.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear brother or sister, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. Do you ever feel that your status, your job, your home, or your family makes you better than others? Do you find yourself hesitating to accept the truth because it might cost you your comfort or your pride?

Remember that Allah gives wealth and children to whomever He wills—both the righteous and the wicked—as a test of their character. The one who truly succeeds is not the one with the most possessions, but the one who uses what Allah has given him to draw closer to Him, to help others, and to submit to His will. Do not let the blessings of this world become a veil between you and your Lord. Instead, let every blessing increase your gratitude, your humility, and your devotion. For the Hereafter is far better and more lasting than anything this fleeting world can offer.
