Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ: recited to him
- آيَاتُنَا: Our verses (the Qur'an)
- أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ: myths/fables/tales of the ancients — i.e., false stories and legends of past nations
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the verses of the Qur'an are recited to this arrogant, sinful person — the one described in the preceding verses as a habitual swearer, a slanderer, a backbiter, a spreader of mischief, a preventer of good, a transgressor, and a cruel, base individual — he does not listen with an open heart. Instead, he immediately rejects the truth and dismisses it, saying: "These are nothing but the fables of the ancients — the myths and legends of bygone peoples."
He claims that the Qur'an is merely stories copied from earlier nations, devoid of any divine origin or truth. This is his defense mechanism: rather than confronting the message with sincerity, he labels it as ancient folklore to escape its profound call. Yet the Qur'an is not a tale of fantasy — it is the living word of Allah, filled with guidance, wisdom, and the blueprint for a life of purpose and salvation.
This verse, though revealed regarding a specific disbeliever from the Quraysh, carries a timeless warning for every believer: beware of following those who possess wealth and children yet become arrogant and turn away from the truth. Wealth and status should never become a barrier between a person and the guidance of Allah. Rather, they are a test — will you remain humble and obedient, or will you become proud and dismissive?
Dear reader, let this be a reminder for your own heart. When the verses of Allah reach you — through the Qur'an, through sincere advice, or through the beauty of creation — do not rush to reject them. Open your heart, reflect, and ask: is this not the truth my soul has been searching for? The Qur'an is not a myth; it is the light that illuminates the darkest paths, the healing for the most wounded hearts, and the guide to eternal success. Embrace it before the day comes when no excuse will be accepted, and no return to this world will be granted.
