Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿaṣaw (they disobeyed): to go against a command, to rebel and refuse to follow.
- Rasūl (Messenger): the prophet sent by Allah to guide his people.
- Akhadhah (seizure/punishment): Allah’s taking them to task through divine retribution.
- Rābiyah (increasing/overwhelming): a punishment that exceeds in severity and intensity, growing beyond measure.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah describes the fate of the nations that came before—like the people of Pharaoh, the tribes that rejected their prophets, and the inhabitants of the towns of Lot who were overturned for their abominable deeds. Each of these communities disobeyed the Messenger sent to them by their Lord, rejecting his call to monotheism and righteousness. They did not merely refuse; they persisted in arrogance and transgression, turning away from the truth that was brought to them.
Because of their defiance, Allah seized them with a punishment that was not ordinary or mild. It was an "Akhdhah Rābiyah"—a taking that was severe, overwhelming, and ever-increasing in intensity. It was a punishment that left no room for escape or survival, a divine response that matched their stubborn rebellion. This serves as a timeless lesson: when a people reject the guidance of Allah’s messengers, they expose themselves to a consequence that is both just and devastating.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. It is not merely a story of the past; it is a living reminder for every generation. Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent messengers to every nation to guide them toward goodness, justice, and salvation. Yet, when they chose disobedience over submission, they faced a fate that shook the heavens and the earth. Today, we have the Qur’an—the final message—and the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The choice is ours: to listen and obey, or to repeat the errors of those before us. Let this verse awaken your heart to the urgency of turning to Allah in humility and love. His door of repentance is open, and His mercy is vast. Do not wait until the punishment becomes inevitable; rather, hasten to His forgiveness and embrace the peace that comes with faith. For Allah is Al-Ghafūr (The Ever-Forgiving) and Ar-Raḥīm (The Most Merciful), and He delights in the return of His servants to Him.
