Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا — "Eat and drink": A command of honor and generosity, not one of obligation.
- هَنِيئًا — "In enjoyment": Food and drink free from any harm, pain, or aftereffect—pure, wholesome, and uninterrupted.
- بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ — "For what you sent ahead": The good deeds you advanced from your worldly life to your afterlife.
- فِي الْأَيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ — "In the days past": The days of your worldly life that have now passed and gone forever.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the believer is handed their book of deeds in their right hand, they rejoice and call out to those around them: "Take my book and read it! I was certain in the worldly life that I would meet my reckoning, so I prepared for it with faith and righteous action." Then, as they enter the highest gardens of Paradise—where fruits hang low, within easy reach whether one is standing, sitting, or reclining—they are welcomed with a divine address of pure generosity: "Eat and drink in enjoyment, with no harm and no sorrow, for what you sent ahead in the days past."
This means: All that you now enjoy is the direct fruit of what you planted in the fleeting days of the world. Your fasts, your prayers, your charity, your patience, your kindness, your truthfulness—all of it has been transformed into this everlasting bliss. Nothing you did was lost; nothing was wasted. The days that seemed long and difficult in the world have become the very currency of your eternal delight.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause at this magnificent verse. Allah does not say, "Eat and drink" to the people of Paradise because they deserve it by their own merit alone—but because His mercy has accepted their deeds and multiplied them beyond imagination. Yet notice the beautiful connection: the reward is tied to *what you sent ahead*. This teaches us that every single day we live is an opportunity to send something forward. Today's prayer is tomorrow's light. Today's charity is tomorrow's shade. Today's forgiveness of others is tomorrow's forgiveness from Allah.
The "days past" are the only days we can invest in. Once they pass, they are gone forever—but their results remain. So let this verse inspire you: do not let a single day pass without sending ahead something good, for you will meet it again in the most beautiful form on the Day you need it most. And know that Allah's generosity is far greater than your deeds—He gives you eternal gardens for a few moments of patience, and everlasting joy for a lifetime of striving in His path.
