Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Thamud: An ancient Arab tribe who lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr (Mada'in Salih) and were sent the Prophet Salih (peace be upon him).
  • Al-Taghiyah: The overwhelming, exceeding-in-intensity cry (Sayhah) that surpassed all bounds in its severity and terror. Some scholars also interpret it as their own transgression and tyranny which became the cause of their destruction.

Tafsir (Explanation):

As for the people of Thamud, Allah destroyed them with a single, deafening, and terrifying cry — a blast so powerful and so far beyond the ordinary that it shattered their very existence. This was not merely a loud sound; it was a divine punishment that exceeded every limit of intensity, striking them with sheer horror and finality. The cry was the direct consequence of their persistent arrogance, their rejection of the truth brought by Prophet Salih, and their defiance of Allah's commands. They had demanded a miracle, and when it was granted — the she-camel — they still refused to believe and even harmed it. So the punishment came upon them suddenly, leaving no room for escape or repentance. Their destruction serves as a timeless reminder that no power, wealth, or pride can shield a people from the decree of Allah when they persist in transgression.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the fate of Thamud — a people of immense strength and architectural brilliance, who carved their homes into mountains and thought themselves invincible. Yet, in a moment, their entire civilization was wiped out by a single cry. This teaches us a profound lesson: no matter how advanced, powerful, or self-sufficient we become, we are always in need of Allah's mercy and guidance. The Qur'an presents these stories not as mere history, but as living lessons for those who have hearts to understand. Today, you have the greatest blessing — the opportunity to know Allah, to worship Him, and to seek His forgiveness before it is too late. Do not let pride or worldly distractions distance you from your Creator. Turn to Him now, for His door of repentance is open, and His mercy encompasses all things. The same Allah who destroyed the tyrants of old is the One who lovingly calls you to Himself today — so answer His call, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.
