Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- ʿĀd – The ancient people of Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him), known for their immense physical strength and arrogance.
- Rīḥin ṣarṣarin – A violently cold, howling wind that made a terrifying, piercing sound as it blew.
- ʿĀtiyah – A wind that exceeded all bounds in its fury and violence, transgressing the normal limits of wind in its destructive force.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the destruction of Thamūd, Allah turns to the fate of the people of ʿĀd. They were a nation of towering stature and formidable power, yet their strength could not protect them from the decree of their Lord. Allah destroyed them with a wind that was intensely cold and fiercely raging—a wind that howled with a terrifying shriek and blew with a force beyond anything known to humanity. It was not a gentle breeze or a passing storm, but a punishment that overwhelmed them completely, leaving no trace of their former glory. This serves as a profound reminder that no matter how mighty a people may become, they remain utterly helpless before the will of Allah. Their arrogance and defiance of His messengers brought about their total annihilation, and their story stands as a timeless lesson for all who come after them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How awe-inspiring is the power of Allah, who controls the very winds that sustain life and turns them into instruments of destruction when His commands are disobeyed! The story of ʿĀd invites us to reflect on our own lives: do we place our trust in our strength, wealth, or status, forgetting that all power belongs to Allah alone? Let this verse awaken in our hearts a profound sense of humility and gratitude. We should thank Allah for His mercy in sending us the Qur’an as a guide, and we should strive to live in obedience to Him, seeking His protection from the fate that befell those who rejected His message. Indeed, the Qur’an is a mercy and a warning, and the wisest among us are those who heed its call before it is too late.
