Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tanqimu (تَنقِمُ): To find fault with, to disapprove of, to hold against someone.
  • Afright (أَفْرِغْ): To pour out abundantly, to grant in full measure.
  • Tawaffana (تَوَفَّنَا): To cause us to die, to take our souls.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse captures the powerful words of the believing magicians of Pharaoh’s court, who, after witnessing the miracles of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), embraced the truth of Allah. When Pharaoh threatened them with severe punishment—cutting off their hands and feet and crucifying them—they responded with unwavering faith and remarkable courage.

They said to Pharaoh: "What fault do you find in us, and what do you hold against us, except that we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us?" In other words, the only "crime" we have committed is that we accepted the clear proofs and miracles that Allah sent through His Messenger Musa. This is not a crime at all—it is the greatest of virtues and the noblest of deeds. Yet Pharaoh, in his arrogance and tyranny, considered it an offense worthy of the harshest punishment.

Then, turning away from Pharaoh’s threats, they directed their hearts to Allah, the Most High, saying: "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and steadfastness, and cause us to die as Muslims (submitted to Your will)." They did not ask for victory over Pharaoh or for the punishment of their enemy—rather, they asked for the strength to remain firm upon the truth, and for their final moments to be upon faith and submission to Allah.

This beautiful supplication teaches us a profound lesson: when faced with trials and persecution, the believer’s ultimate concern is not worldly gain or revenge, but steadfastness upon the path of Allah and a good ending. They understood that true success lies in dying upon Islam, and they begged their Lord for exactly that.

Their request for "patience" (sabr) was not for a small amount, but for an overwhelming, all-encompassing patience—one that would fill their hearts and protect them from any weakness or hesitation. And their request to die as Muslims was a sign of their complete submission, their total surrender to the will of their Creator.

This verse is a shining example of faith in action. These were people who had just believed, yet their faith was so deep and sincere that they were willing to sacrifice everything—their hands, their feet, their very lives—for the sake of Allah. They teach us that true faith is not merely words on the tongue, but a conviction that transforms the heart and emboldens the soul to face any hardship with dignity and courage.

For every believer, this verse is a reminder that the path of truth may be difficult, but the reward is immense. When we face opposition for our faith, we should remember the example of these noble souls and turn to Allah with the same supplication: "Our Lord, pour upon us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims." For indeed, Allah is with the patient, and He never abandons those who put their trust in Him.
