Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rabbi (My Lord): The One who creates, nurtures, and sustains all of creation.
- Ighfir (Forgive): To cover sins, erase them, and protect the person from their consequences.
- Rahmatika (Your Mercy): The vast, encompassing compassion and kindness of Allah that He bestows upon His servants.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) realized the truth about his brother Harun (Aaron, peace be upon him)—that Harun had genuinely fulfilled his duty, warned the people, and was overpowered by them rather than willingly participating in their sin—Musa’s heart softened. He understood that his earlier anger, expressed by seizing his brother’s beard and head, had been hasty. So he turned to his Lord in humble supplication, saying: *"My Lord, forgive me"*—for the anger and harshness he had shown toward his brother—*"and forgive my brother"*—for any shortcoming that may have occurred from him in dealing with the Children of Israel, though he was innocent of the worship of the calf. Then he asked for something even greater: *"and admit us into Your mercy"*—a mercy that encompasses them, surrounds them, and protects them from all evil, in this life and the next. He concluded with the beautiful acknowledgment: *"and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy."*
This supplication reveals profound lessons for every believer. First, it teaches us the virtue of reconciliation and humility—even a great prophet like Musa did not hesitate to apologize and seek forgiveness for his brother when he realized his error. Second, it shows us that forgiveness is not just about removing sin, but about entering into the vast ocean of Allah’s mercy, which is greater than any human compassion. Third, it reminds us that our relationship with Allah is built on His mercy, not our perfection—we all make mistakes, but the door of repentance is always open.
Dear believer, when you stumble or fall short, do not despair. Follow the example of Musa—turn to your Lord, acknowledge your weakness, ask for His forgiveness, and seek His encompassing mercy. For indeed, Allah’s mercy is greater than your sins, and His love for those who repent is immense. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"By Him in Whose Hand my life is, if you were not to commit sins, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace you with those people who would commit sins and seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would pardon them."* So never lose hope in the mercy of the Most Merciful—He delights in forgiving His servants who turn to Him with sincere hearts.
