📖 English Meaning
How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sā'a (سَاءَ): How evil or how bad — an expression of extreme disapproval and condemnation.
  • Mathalan (مَثَلًا): An example, likeness, or parable.
  • Āyātinā (آيَاتِنَا): Our signs, proofs, evidences, and miracles.
  • Yazlimūn (يَظْلِمُونَ): They wrong or oppress — here, specifically referring to wronging their own souls.

Tafsir (Explanation):

How terrible and repugnant is the example of those who denied Our signs and proofs! They rejected the clear evidences of Allah’s power, wisdom, and mercy — the very signs that were sent to guide them to the truth. Yet, in doing so, they were not harming Allah in the least; rather, they were only wronging their own souls. By stubbornly refusing to believe, they led themselves down the path of destruction, depriving themselves of the light of guidance and sealing their own fate in misery.

These people combined two grave errors: they rejected the truth after it had become clear to them, and they inflicted injustice upon themselves by choosing disbelief over faith. Their example stands as a warning — a mirror reflecting the consequences of arrogance and stubbornness in the face of divine truth.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this verse deeply. Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent His signs to every nation and every generation — not to burden us, but to illuminate our path. The Qur'an itself is the greatest of these signs, a living miracle that speaks to hearts and minds alike. Yet, how many turn away from it today, just as those before them turned away?

The tragedy is not that these people were ignorant — it is that they knew the truth and still rejected it. They wronged none but themselves, just as every soul that turns away from Allah’s guidance only harms its own spiritual well-being.

Let this verse be a gentle reminder for you: the signs of Allah are all around you — in the heavens, in the earth, in your own creation, and in the words of the Qur'an. Do not be among those who see the truth but refuse to embrace it. Open your heart, reflect, and let these signs draw you closer to your Creator. For in accepting His guidance, you are not doing Allah a favor — you are saving your own soul from loss and unlocking the door to eternal success.

📜 Verse 175-179 — Al-A'raf

And recite to them, [O Muhammad], the news of him to whom we gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.
And if We had willed, we could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.
How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves.
Whoever Allah guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray - it is those who are the losers.
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
