Word Meanings:

  • Al-Asma' al-Husna (الأسماء الحسنى): The Most Beautiful Names of Allah, which denote His perfect attributes and sublime qualities.
  • Ud'uhu biha (فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا): Call upon Him, supplicate to Him, and invoke Him using these Names.
  • Yulhidun (يُلْحِدُونَ): Those who deviate, distort, or turn away from the truth regarding Allah's Names — whether by denying them, misinterpreting them, attributing them to false deities, or altering their meanings.
  • Sayujzawna (سَيُجْزَوْنَ): They will surely be recompensed or requited.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse establishes a profound and beautiful principle of Islamic faith: to Allah alone belong the Most Beautiful Names — names that reflect His absolute perfection, majesty, and boundless mercy. Every single one of His Names is inherently good and beautiful, carrying meanings of greatness, compassion, wisdom, and power. There is no name more beautiful than His, and no attribute that can be compared to His.

The verse then commands us: "Call upon Him by these Names." This is a direct invitation from our Lord to draw near to Him. When you supplicate, call Him "O Rahman (The Most Merciful)," "O Razzaq (The Provider)," "O Ghafoor (The Oft-Forgiving)," "O Sami' (The All-Hearing)" — and ask Him for what you need, knowing that He hears you, sees you, and is fully capable of answering. This is not merely a ritual; it is a means of building a living, intimate connection with your Creator. When you call Him by His Names, you are acknowledging His attributes and placing your trust in His perfect nature. This is the essence of true worship — knowing who you are calling upon.

Then the verse sternly warns us to abandon those who "commit ilhad" (deviation) regarding His Names. This includes those who distort His Names, deny them, give them to false gods and idols, or twist their meanings to suit their desires. Such people are not just making a linguistic error — they are committing a grave spiritual offense by misrepresenting the Almighty. The verse assures us that they will not escape justice: they will be recompensed for what they used to do. This is a comforting promise for the believers — that truth will prevail, and falsehood will be dealt with.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the immense honor Allah has bestowed upon you: He has revealed His Most Beautiful Names so that you may know Him, love Him, and call upon Him. This is not a distant, unknowable deity — this is a Lord who introduces Himself to you, who invites you to address Him by His own chosen names. What greater mercy could there be?

When you are in distress, call upon "Al-Mujib" (The Responsive). When you have sinned, call upon "Al-Tawwab" (The Acceptor of Repentance). When you feel lost, call upon "Al-Hadi" (The Guide). These Names are doors of mercy that never close. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that Allah has 99 Names — whoever memorizes, understands, and acts upon them will enter Paradise. So make it your daily practice to learn His Names, reflect on their meanings, and weave them into your supplications. Let your heart be filled with awe and love as you utter them.

And as for those who distort His Names — do not waste your energy arguing with them or following their falsehood. Leave them to their Lord, for He is fully aware of their deeds and will settle the account with perfect justice. Your duty is to worship with sincerity and to call upon Him in the way He has taught you. In this is your salvation, your peace, and your ultimate success.

📜 Verse 178-182 — Al-A'raf

Whoever Allah guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray - it is those who are the losers.
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.
And among those We created is a community which guides by truth and thereby establishes justice.
But those who deny Our signs - We will progressively lead them [to destruction] from where they do not know.
