Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:

- Sabīl Allāh: The path of Allah — meaning the straight path of faith, obedience, and righteousness (Islam).
- Yabghūnahā ʿiwajan: They seek to make it crooked or deviant — i.e., they desire that the path of truth be distorted so that people find it unattractive or difficult to follow.
- Kāfirūn: Disbelievers — those who reject and deny the truth of the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the characteristics of the wicked people who will be addressed by the dwellers of Paradise. They are those who not only turn away themselves from the straight path of Allah — the path of submission to Him and obedience to His commandments — but they also actively work to prevent others from walking upon it. They strive with all their might to make this path appear crooked, flawed, and undesirable, so that people may be discouraged from embracing the truth. They spread doubts, fabricate lies, and distort the message of the prophets, all in an effort to block humanity from the guidance that leads to salvation.
Furthermore, they are described as being utterly disbelieving in the Hereafter. Their hearts are sealed against the reality of the Day of Judgment, the resurrection, and the eternal recompense. Because they do not believe in the accountability of the afterlife, they feel no restraint in their wrongdoing and no incentive to seek the truth. Their entire worldview is confined to this worldly life, and so they see no harm in misleading others, for they believe there is no consequence beyond the grave.
These are the people who will be veiled from the mercy of Allah on the Day of Judgment, and they will be the companions of the Fire, as the following verses elaborate.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect upon the gravity of this description. The greatest injustice a person can commit is not merely to go astray themselves, but to actively pull others away from the path of Allah. How many people today, through their words, actions, or influence, discourage others from embracing Islam or from practicing it sincerely? Every one of us has a responsibility — not to be a barrier between people and their Creator, but to be a bridge of goodness.
The beauty of Islam is that it calls to the straight path — a path of peace, justice, mercy, and eternal success. It is a path that leads to the pleasure of Allah and the everlasting bliss of Paradise. Do not let the whispers of those who seek to distort this path deceive you. Open your heart to the truth, and you will find that the Hereafter is not a distant myth, but a certain reality for which we must prepare. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent us clear guidance through His Book and His Messenger ﷺ. Seize this opportunity before it is too late, and be among those who not only walk the straight path but also lovingly invite others to it. The reward is immense, and the success is everlasting.
