Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Mala' (الملأ): The chiefs, leaders, and prominent figures of a community—those whose status fills the eyes and hearts of others.
- Fi Dalal (في ضلال): In error, misguidance, or deviation from the path of truth and right guidance.
- Mubin (مبين): Clear, evident, and unmistakable—so obvious that no one can deny it.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah narrates to us the response of the chiefs and leaders of Prophet Nuh's (Noah, peace be upon him) people when he called them to worship Allah alone and abandon their idols. These arrogant leaders—who were accustomed to their status, wealth, and influence—looked at this noble prophet and said to him with disdain and self-assurance: "Indeed, we see you in clear misguidance."
They claimed that Nuh (peace be upon him) had strayed far from the truth, simply because he opposed their ancestral traditions and called them to monotheism. Their words were filled with arrogance and a sense of superiority, as they considered themselves the standard of truth and wisdom. They could not comprehend that a man from among them, who had no special wealth or status, could be a messenger of Allah. So, they accused him of being lost and misguided—an accusation that was, in reality, a reflection of their own blindness and stubbornness.
Yet, how ironic is this statement! The one who was truly upon the straight path—guided by his Lord—was being accused of misguidance by those who were drowning in ignorance and pride. This is the way of the arrogant in every era: they label the callers to truth as deviants, simply because the truth challenges their interests and comforts.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when you stand for the truth, do not be surprised if the influential and powerful people of your society label you as misguided or extreme. This is not a new phenomenon—it happened to the greatest of prophets. Nuh (peace be upon him) was called misguided by his people's elite, yet he remained patient and steadfast for centuries, calling them to Allah with wisdom and perseverance.
If you are upon clear guidance from Allah—following the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah—then do not let the criticism of the arrogant shake your certainty. Their words say more about their own hearts than about your path. The believer's compass is not the approval of people, but the pleasure of Allah. Remember that the truth may be strange among its people, but it remains the truth, and its people will be honored by Allah in this life and the Hereafter.
So, hold firm to your faith, be patient in the face of mockery and accusations, and know that the final victory belongs to the righteous—just as it did for Nuh (peace be upon him) and all the messengers who came after him.
