Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kallā (كَلَّا): Absolutely not! A strong negation, meaning that what the disbeliever wishes for will never happen.
- Innahā (إِنَّهَا): Indeed, it (referring to the Fire of Hell).
- Laẓā (لَظَىٰ): One of the names of Hellfire, meaning the blazing, fiercely burning flame that leaps and scorches.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a decisive and emphatic response to the wish of the wicked person who, on the Day of Judgment, will desperately offer his children, his wife, his brother, and even all of humanity as a ransom to save himself from the punishment of Allah. The Almighty refutes this utterly: "Absolutely not!" — no ransom, no sacrifice, no worldly treasure will ever be accepted to rescue him from the torment.
Then Allah describes the terrifying reality awaiting such a person: "Indeed, it is Laẓā" — the blazing Fire of Hell, one of its very names, which burns with an intense, raging heat that never subsides. It is not merely a fire; it is a fire that tears off the skin of the scalp and the extremities of the body due to its unbearable heat, and it calls out to those who turned away from the truth in this worldly life, who abandoned obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and who hoarded wealth in their treasuries without fulfilling the rights of Allah upon it.
This verse serves as a profound warning to every soul: the Day of Judgment is a day of absolute justice, where no bargaining, no wealth, no lineage, and no status will avail anyone. The only thing that will save a person on that day is sincere faith, righteous deeds, and the mercy of Allah — which He bestows upon those who seek Him in this life.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart before that Day arrives — a Day when every soul will be preoccupied with its own salvation, and no ransom will be accepted. The door of repentance is open now, in this fleeting life. Turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, perform the obligations He has placed upon you, and spend from what He has given you for His sake. For the Fire is real, and its heat is unimaginable — but equally real is the Paradise whose width is the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who are mindful of Allah. Choose now, while the choice is still yours, and let not the distractions of this world make you forget the purpose of your existence. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned you so that you may be saved — so respond to His call before it is too late.
