Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Haloo'an (هَلُوعًا): This refers to extreme restlessness, anxiety, and impatience. It describes a state of intense agitation that overcomes a person when faced with fear, hardship, or even strong desire for worldly gains.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah informs us in this profound verse that the human being has been created with an innate disposition of *hala'* — a deep-seated restlessness and impatience. This is not a blameworthy trait in itself, for it is part of human nature, but rather it is a test from Allah. When hardship strikes, the person becomes overwhelmed with anxiety and despair; when good fortune comes their way, they become miserly and withhold what they have from others. This natural inclination toward agitation and greed reveals the weakness of the human condition when left unguided.
However, this verse is not a condemnation of humanity. Rather, it is an invitation to recognize our own fragility and to seek refuge in Allah. The very next verses (which follow this one) beautifully describe the exceptions — those who are saved from this negative trait through faith and righteous deeds. They are the people of prayer who remain steadfast, those who give their wealth willingly to the needy, those who believe in the Day of Judgment and fear their Lord's punishment, and those who guard their chastity. These individuals rise above their natural human weakness by connecting themselves to Allah and His commands.
This verse teaches us that while we are created with certain weaknesses, we are not left without a solution. Islam provides the complete remedy: turning to Allah in prayer, purifying our wealth through charity, and living with awareness of the Hereafter. When we do so, we transform our natural restlessness into a driving force for good — channeling our energy into worship, our desires into lawful pursuits, and our fears into consciousness of Allah.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a mirror that shows us our own reality. Every one of us has felt that anxiety when things go wrong, and that tight-fistedness when we have plenty. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not leave us in this state. He tells us about our weakness only to show us the path to strength. The path is open — it is the path of prayer, charity, and faith. When you pray, your heart finds peace. When you give, your soul expands. When you believe in the Hereafter, your worries about this world shrink to their proper size. This is the beautiful balance of Islam: it takes you as you are, with all your human frailties, and elevates you to a station of dignity and tranquility. Do not despair of your nature — rather, embrace the remedy that your Creator has provided. He knows you perfectly because He created you, and He has given you the perfect guidance to overcome your weaknesses and attain true success in this life and the next.
