Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Massahu (مَسَّهُ): touched him, afflicted him, or befell him.
  • Ash-Sharr (الشَّرُّ): hardship, evil, adversity — including poverty, illness, distress, or any form of harm.
  • Jazu'an (جَزُوعًا): restless, impatient, panicked, overwhelmed by anxiety and despair — lacking patience and composure.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes a fundamental trait of the human being when left to his natural, unrefined disposition: when hardship touches him — whether it be poverty, sickness, loss, or any form of adversity — he becomes frantic and impatient. He wails, panics, and loses all sense of balance, as if the world has collapsed around him. This is the state of one who has not anchored his heart in faith, who sees only the immediate pain and forgets the greater purpose, the reward of patience, and the wisdom of Allah in every trial.

Yet this description is not a final verdict on humanity. It is a call to rise above this weak nature. The verse sets the stage for what follows: the exception — those who are steadfast in prayer, who give from their wealth, who believe in the Day of Judgment, who fear their Lord's punishment, and who guard their chastity. These are the people who transform their natural weakness into strength through faith. When hardship strikes them, they do not crumble; they turn to Allah with patience, supplication, and hope. They understand that every trial is a test, and every test carries within it a hidden mercy.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not a condemnation of you — it is an invitation. Allah, the Most Merciful, knows exactly what He created. He knows that your heart trembles when hardship comes, that your soul feels heavy, and that your mind races with worry. But He did not leave you in that state. He gave you the keys to rise above it: prayer, patience, charity, and certainty in His promise. When you feel the sting of hardship, remember that the One who sent the trial is the same One who will send the relief. He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. So do not be like those who panic and despair; be like those who, when calamity strikes, say: "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we will return." That is the path of true strength, the path of the believers, and the path that leads to eternal peace. Embrace it, and you will find that even the darkest moments become a source of light.

When evil touches him, impatient,
