Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "جَمَعَ" (Jama'a): He accumulated and amassed wealth.
  • "فَأَوْعَىٰ" (Fa aw'ā): He hoarded it and kept it in a container (i.e., he withheld it and did not spend from it in the way of Allah).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes the state of those who turn away from the truth and reject the call of Allah and His Messenger. Such a person is one who gathered wealth and hoarded it, keeping it locked away in his treasuries, refusing to fulfill the right of Allah upon it — whether through obligatory charity (zakah), voluntary spending, or other acts of goodness. His sole concern was accumulation and retention, not gratitude or generosity. He did not use his wealth to draw closer to Allah, nor did he aid the needy or support the cause of righteousness. Instead, he clung to it out of greed and miserliness, as if his wealth were his eternal companion and his ultimate goal.

This attitude reflects a deep spiritual blindness — the person believes that his wealth will protect him or secure his future, yet on the Day of Judgment, this very wealth will be a source of regret and punishment. The Qur'an warns that such a person, who turned away from the truth and hoarded his riches without fulfilling Allah's rights, will face a severe reckoning. The fire of Hell will call out to him, seizing him by his scalp and limbs, because he refused to respond to the call of faith and mercy in this world.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: wealth is not an enemy, but it becomes a curse when it consumes the heart and distances a person from Allah. The believer understands that wealth is a trust (amanah) from Allah, a means to test how we spend it. The most beloved of people to Allah are those who, when blessed with abundance, remember the poor, support the needy, and invest in what pleases their Lord. Do not let your possessions own you — own them with gratitude and generosity. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The son of Adam says: 'My wealth, my wealth!' But is there anything of your wealth except what you ate and consumed, or what you wore and wore out, or what you gave in charity and kept for yourself (as reward)?" (Muslim). So, let your wealth be a bridge to Paradise, not a burden that drags you to Hell. Open your hand in giving, and your heart will find peace, and your Lord will multiply your provision and reward.
