Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَزْوَاجِهِمْ (azwājihim): Their wives — the women to whom they are lawfully married.
- مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ (mā malakat aymānuhum): What their right hands possess — i.e., female captives of war (slaves) who became lawful for them through legitimate ownership.
- غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ (ghayru malūmīn): Not blameworthy — free from any reproach or sin.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues describing the qualities of the believers who will be honored in Paradise. After mentioning that they guard their chastity and restrain their desires from anything forbidden, Allah makes a clear exception: they are permitted to be intimate with their lawful wives and with the female captives whom they rightfully own. In these two cases, they bear no blame or sin whatsoever, for Allah Himself has made these relationships lawful and pure.
This exception highlights the wisdom of Islamic legislation — it does not suppress natural human desires, but rather channels them into lawful, dignified, and responsible avenues. The believer is not a monk who abandons worldly pleasures, nor is he a slave to his passions. Instead, he submits to the boundaries set by his Creator, finding peace and contentment within them. The verse reassures the believer that fulfilling one's desires within the framework Allah has ordained is not only permissible but praiseworthy, and it carries no guilt or shame.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Islam is a religion of balance and mercy. It does not demand from human beings what they cannot bear, nor does it leave them without guidance. By permitting intimacy within marriage and with what one rightfully owns, Allah acknowledges human nature and provides a pure, dignified path for its fulfillment. This is a profound mercy — the believer can enjoy the blessings of this life while remaining obedient to Allah, and in doing so, he earns both worldly contentment and eternal reward. How beautiful is this religion that purifies even our most private moments and turns them into acts of obedience when done within His boundaries! Let every Muslim take pride in this noble guidance and thank Allah for the clarity and ease He has granted us.
