Word Meanings:

(Nakhoodu): We would plunge into or engage in.
(Al-Kha'ideen): Those who engage in falsehood, vain talk, and sinful discourse.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the dwellers of Hell continue to list the reasons that led them to their terrible fate. They confess: "And we used to plunge into falsehood along with those who plunged into it." This means they did not merely observe evil from a distance—they actively participated in it. They sat in gatherings where the truth was mocked, where sacred matters were ridiculed, and where sinful speech flowed freely. Instead of distancing themselves from such company or objecting to it, they willingly joined in, laughing along and adding their own words to the tide of falsehood.

This confession reveals a profound truth about the nature of sin: it rarely remains isolated. When a person neglects prayer and charity, their heart hardens, and they become easy prey for the company of those who mock the truth. They begin to find pleasure in vain discussions, in ridiculing the righteous, and in dismissing the reality of the Hereafter. The verse shows that their downfall was not a single act but a gradual descent—from neglecting worship, to abandoning good deeds, to finally drowning in the company of the misguided.

The word "خوض" (khawd) in Arabic carries the imagery of wading into water or mud—it suggests plunging deeply into something, not just touching the surface. These people did not merely stumble into sin; they immersed themselves in it, taking pride in their participation in falsehood. They were not passive bystanders but active contributors to the corruption around them.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse serves as a powerful warning for every believer. It reminds us that the company we keep shapes our hearts and our destiny. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom he takes as a close friend." (Reported by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

How often do we find ourselves in gatherings where the name of Allah is not mentioned, where backbiting occurs, where jokes are made at the expense of religion, or where time is wasted in frivolous talk? The people of Hell admitted that their sin was not just what they did in private—it was what they participated in publicly with others. They normalized sin by sharing it with company, and this normalization made it easier to persist until death overtook them.

Islam calls us to be conscious of our environment. Allah says in the Quran: "And when you see those who engage in false discourse about Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation." (6:68) The believer is commanded to protect their heart and their faith by avoiding gatherings of falsehood, and if they find themselves in such a place, they must either correct the situation or leave.

This verse also teaches us the importance of repentance before death arrives. The people of Hell regretted their actions, but regret came too late. Every one of us has the opportunity today—right now—to change our company, to purify our speech, and to distance ourselves from what displeases Allah. The doors of repentance are open until the moment of death, and Allah's mercy is vast. Do not let the company of the heedless drag you into the same end. Choose the company of the righteous, who remind you of Allah, and you will find your heart softened, your deeds accepted, and your path illuminated toward Paradise.

📜 Verse 43-47 — Al-Muddaththir

They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
Nor did we used to feed the poor.
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
Until there came to us the certainty."
