Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shafā‘ah (شفاعة): Intercession; the act of pleading on behalf of another to secure benefit or avert harm.
- Ash-Shāfi‘īn (الشّافعِين): Those who intercede — including angels, prophets, and righteous believers.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers and sinners who rejected the truth are plunged into the Fire, they will desperately seek any means of escape. They will ask for intercessors to plead their case before Allah. Yet this verse declares plainly: “So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.”
Why? Because intercession on that Day is not a matter of personal connections or worldly status. It is an honor granted solely by Allah’s permission and restricted to those for whom He is pleased. The angels, the prophets, and the righteous — all of whom possess great rank with Allah — will not be able to intercede for those who lived in disbelief and persisted in sin until death without repentance. The very condition for intercession is that the person being interceded for must be one whom Allah has accepted and approved of. Since the disbelievers rejected Allah’s messengers, denied His signs, and died upon that state, they have excluded themselves from this mercy. Their fate is sealed, and no plea, no mediator, and no advocate can alter it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a profound reminder of the urgency of this life. The intercession we hope for on the Day of Judgment is not a guarantee we can claim carelessly — it is a reward for faith and righteous deeds. Today, the doors of repentance are wide open. Allah’s mercy is vast, and His Prophet ﷺ will intercede for the believers of his Ummah. But that intercession is for those who strove to obey Allah, who loved His Messenger, and who turned back to Him before death overtook them. Do not let the illusion of “someone will save me” deceive you. The only one who can truly save you is your Lord — and He has shown you the way. Run to Him now, before the Day arrives when no intercessor’s plea will avail you. Make your life a testimony of faith, and your hope of intercession will be a reality, not a regret.
