Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Yaqeen (اليقين): In this context, it refers to death — the absolute certainty that every soul must face, which removes all doubt and brings the ultimate reality of the afterlife before one's eyes.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the answer that the dwellers of Hell give when asked what led them to their terrible fate. They confess: "We persisted in our denial and disobedience until death came to us — the certainty that leaves no room for doubt or escape." They admit that they continued in their heedlessness, rejecting the truth, neglecting prayer, refusing charity, and mocking the Day of Judgment, until the angel of death seized them while they were still in that state of sin. At that moment, all chances for repentance vanished, and the door of return was sealed forever. The word "yaqeen" (certainty) is used here for death because it is the one event in life that is absolutely guaranteed — no one can deny it, no one can delay it, and no one can bargain with it. When it arrives, every soul sees the truth clearly, but for those who rejected it, that vision comes too late.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and let this verse touch your heart. These are the words of people who now stand in the fire of regret, describing how they reached that point — not by a sudden fall, but by gradual neglect and persistent denial, until death overtook them. The Qur'an shares this conversation with us not to frighten us aimlessly, but to awaken us while we still have time. You are alive right now, breathing, reading these words — and that means the door of repentance is still open for you. Do not wait until the certainty of death arrives, for then no prayer will be accepted, no charity will avail, and no return will be possible. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The intelligent person is the one who subdues his soul and works for what comes after death, while the foolish one is the one who follows his desires and still expects good from Allah." Let today be your day of turning back. Pray, give charity, believe in the Day of Judgment, and live a life that will make you smile when you meet your Lord. For the believers who strive, the gardens of Paradise await — a reward beyond description, where no fear or sorrow shall touch them. Choose now, before the certainty comes to you.
