Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-ʿĀjilah (الْعَاجِلَةَ): The immediate, fleeting life of this world — that which is quick to pass and perish.
  • Yadharūna (يَذَرُونَ): They leave behind, abandon, or neglect.
  • Warāʾahum (وَرَاءَهُمْ): Literally "behind them" — meaning ahead of them after death, as what lies in the future is "behind" a person's back when they do not face it.
  • Yawman Thaqīlan (يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا): A heavy, burdensome Day — the Day of Resurrection, whose terrors and hardships are immense and overwhelming.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse draws our attention to a painful reality about the disbelievers of Quraysh and those who share their mindset: they are utterly captivated by the immediate, glittering pleasures of this worldly life. They run after its fleeting joys — wealth, status, comfort, and desire — as if this life were their final destination. Their hearts cling to what is quick and perishable, and they turn their backs on what truly matters.

And what do they abandon? They leave behind them — that is, they neglect and ignore — a Day of immense weight and severity: the Day of Judgment. This is a Day so heavy that the heavens, the earth, and the mountains could not bear to carry its burden. It is a Day filled with terrors, trials, and consequences that no soul can escape. Yet these people act as though it will never come, or as though they will never stand before their Lord to be held accountable for every deed, every word, and every intention.

The tragedy is not merely their love of the world — for loving the good things of this life is not blameworthy in itself — but their complete disregard for what lies ahead. They do not prepare for that heavy Day, nor do they take any provision of faith, righteousness, or repentance to lighten its weight upon them.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: where is your heart attached? Are you like those who love only what is immediate and visible, spending all your energy on the temporary while neglecting the eternal? Or are you among those who understand that this world is but a bridge — a place of planting for the harvest of the Hereafter?

The Qurʾān does not tell us this story to merely inform us of the disbelievers' state. It is a mirror held up to our own souls. The heavy Day is real, and it is coming — whether we believe it or not. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the opportunity to prepare for it now, before it is too late. Every prayer you offer, every kindness you show, every sin you abandon, every tear you shed in repentance — these are the provisions that will lighten that Day for you.

Do not be like those who leave the heavy Day behind their backs, only to meet it face to face with empty hands. Instead, be wise: love this world as a traveler loves a resting spot — enough to take what you need, but never enough to forget your true destination. For the one who prepares for that heavy Day will find it, by Allah's grace, transformed into a Day of joy, mercy, and eternal success.

📜 Verse 25-29 — Al-Insan

And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening
And during the night prostrate to Him and exalt Him a long [part of the] night.
Indeed, these [disbelievers] love the immediate and leave behind them a grave Day.
We have created them and strengthened their forms, and when We will, We can change their likenesses with [complete] alteration.
Indeed, this is a reminder, so he who wills may take to his Lord a way.
