Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿudhran (عُذْرًا): An excuse or justification — meaning to remove any excuse from people, so they cannot say on the Day of Judgment that they were not warned.
- nudhran (نُذْرًا): A warning — plural of *nadhir*, meaning a clear admonition or alert about the consequences of wrongdoing.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the oath sequence at the opening of Surah Al-Mursalat, where Allah swears by various winds and angels to affirm the certainty of the Day of Judgment. The verse states that the revelation sent down to the prophets serves a dual purpose: it is both an *excuse* (ʿudhran) and a *warning* (nudhran) for humanity.
As an excuse, the divine message removes every justification for disbelief or disobedience. No one will be able to claim on the Day of Resurrection, "We were not informed," or "We did not know." The truth has been delivered clearly, and the path has been illuminated.
As a warning, the revelation alerts people to the consequences of their choices — the reality of accountability, the fire for those who reject, and the bliss for those who believe and act righteously. The warning is not a threat for its own sake, but a mercy that gives people the chance to turn back before it is too late.
This verse beautifully captures the essence of divine communication: it is never arbitrary or purposeless. Every message from Allah carries the balance of hope and fear — hope that leads to sincere repentance, and fear that prevents heedlessness. The Qur'an itself embodies this perfect balance, calling people with gentleness while reminding them of the serious reality that awaits them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder how your Lord has left no excuse for you. He sent His books, His messengers, and His signs — all so that you may live with clarity and die with certainty. The same revelation that warns you of the fire also opens the doors of His mercy. Do not let the warning pass you by as mere words; let it move your heart to action. For the One who sent this reminder is the Most Merciful, and His warning is itself a proof of His love — He does not want you to be destroyed, but to be saved. Respond to His call today, and you will find that the excuse He granted you becomes your greatest treasure on the Day when excuses will no longer avail.
